It’s not too late to learn how to tele this winter! Cool guys. Cool Gals. Feels like flying. Light gear. Access to the backcountry. Better work out. Better butt. Just a few of the reasons you hear when people talk about telemark skiing, fondly referred to simply as tele. “Oh and I tele and fly fish,” commented the handsome guy my friend was trying to fix me up with. Needless to say, handsome guy is now BF (boyfriend) and some six years later I have never looked back at my life pre tele…….
We tele folks boast about freeing our heels and our minds. I was asked what that really means in my class last week (I teach tele every Saturday at Breck). One of my students, a 50 something marathon runner, cyclist, fit-kind-of-a-guy said “Oh it’s all about the good ole days of Jerry Garcia, The Dead, and……...” For us, tele is a badge of honor and we are not shy about letting the world know about it, Training Heels Not Required, If it was Easy They Would Call it Snowboarding, are just a few of our mantras.
Learning how to tele can be a relatively fast progression. Most “Never Evers” come to our Saturday line ups with a few years of alpine, a passion for the outdoors, and enthusiasm for learning something new. After your first few greens the stance starts to happen, the mechanics make a little sense, you are hooked, and your alpine’s start to collect dust. It’s usually that easy!
Take action now, don’t wait until next winter! Make a statement while improving your butt; join a fun bunch of certified tele instructors and students of all abilities every Saturday for Tele Saturday at Breckenridge, now through mid April for a full day lesson (888-LRN-2SKI, www.breckenridge.snow.com). Tell the gang at Mountain Outfitters in Breck you are joining us and they will give you 50% off of a rental package. Whether the motivation to learn is your boyfriend, your 3 year old, spending more time with your gal, or you are training for Denali…….tele is where it is at. Yup, free your heel and your mind will follow. Don’t forget, it’s a great pick up line too!
