BEAVER CREEK, Colo. - If the urge to join the ranks of Beaver Creek’s finest has struck, prepare to provide plenty of proof on March 22, 2008. Beaver Creek Ski Patrol is hosting its annual testing opportunity for new hire candidates for the 2008-2009 season.
“Skiers, riders and tele skiers can test their skills on a variety of terrain and show us what they’re made of prior to the end of the season,” said Beaver Creek Ski Patrol Director Addy McCord.
“We’ll be evaluating each candidate’s abilities in a variety of conditions, including steeps and powder. We’re looking for men and women with strong, solid abilities in all conditions, not just finesse.” Testing includes an opening meeting and explanation, the ski test, which consists of two-to-three runs taken in variable conditions and evaluated by four or five members of Beaver Creek’s current patrol team, and a closing meeting. Participants will be advised of test results at the closing meeting.
Those who pass the physical test will be invited back the following day, March 23, to shadow a patroller, learn basic ski patrol skills and fill out a job application.
Hiring of patrol positions takes place each fall, prior to ski season. Beaver Creek Ski Patrol hires a handful of new patrollers each year to join its 40-member staff. Ski Patrol opens and closes the mountain each day and provides emergency medical care, skier responsibility education and enforcement, mitigation of avalanche hazard, guest relations and assistance. “This is a way of life for most patrollers,” added McCord. “We have a great team and everyone works hard. To work outside, be first on the mountain and last off, helping people—it’s a pretty great job.” Interested participants should contact Beaver Creek Ski Patrol at (970) 845-6610. Advance reservations are required. Participants will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Patrol Headquarters at the top of the Cinch Express Lift (#8) on Saturday, March 22. # # #
